Departure Delays and Another (and another) Change in Plans

I mentioned in my last blog there were several reasons for our departure delay. Usually when we choose a departure date, we’re hell bent on leaving that day. Our initial October 15th date presumed Blue, our Ford Transit van, would be ready when we were, but he wasn’t. I’ll let David regale you in his next Blue View with another Blue episode that’s guaranteed to entertain you. In the meantime.... our delayed departure beyond Blue.

First, there was the voting issue. Convenient ballot drop-off boxes were not available until October 17th in our area and we thought this was worth waiting for. Secondly, after considering  heading East, we were rethinking this long route since we’d decided to be back in Las Vegas for Thanksgiving. We scrapped the “go East”plan and decided instead to head to the Midwest... Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana... to ride some of the GART bike trails. A good friend in Indiana even offered to play chauffeur and provide rides along the path so we could avoid having to ride in both directions. This became the new plan.

Then the  pandemic began spiking again in many areas and the Midwest and rural areas were (and are) being hit hard. Additionally, we began following the area temperatures for our destinations... pretty cold for camping in Blue, especially for warm weather wimps like us. That got us to thinking about other alternatives... warmer ones.

Without heading East, about the only place warmer than Nevada this time of year is southern Arizona. Though admittedly we typically change our minds a lot when it comes to itineraries (we think of this as adaptability), we usually have a rough idea of where and what we initially intend to visit. Not this time. Arizona is a big state and other than heading to Flagstaff for our first night, we have no definitive plans. The bikes are packed. We’ve got warm weather and cooler weather clothes aboard. We’ve stocked some food and Blue’s diesel tank is full. And we’re off. We’ll figure out where we’re going when we get there.

Are you game for an unknown destination road trip? You never know where we’ll all end up, but then that’s part of the adventure, isn’t it
