Days Ways to Celebrate – May 7 – May 13 2020
/We’re into the second week of May already and several places are now relaxing their ‘shelter in place’ orders (not Nevada yet, but soon!). Returning to the old normal, however, is much easier said than done. Some folks are still leery of venturing out into crowds… social distancing and mask wearing may will become part of the new norm. No need to worry, however, because we’ve got a whole new week of celebrations to think about. We’ll be lauding Moms and nurses, celebrating jumping frogs and watching old Twilight Zone episodes while wearing mismatched socks and eating coconut cream pie. What’s not to celebrate?
May 7th
National Password Day
With so much digital insecurity these days, today is the day to review your password safety protocol. Hackers are devious and clever. Protect your identity and your private information by following these best practices and consider using a ‘password vault’ for generating random passwords and saving them for you. We have been using LastPass for a few years at Gentry’s suggestion and have been quite satisfied with it.

National Coconut Cream Pie Day
I really love food days. I’m not a big dessert kind of girl, but coconut cream pie is one of my downfalls. I love it. I like making it, serving it and especially eating it… lots of it. Celebrate by making a pie today and then sharing it. My recipe is an easy one. I buy a graham cracker crust, add some extra coconut flakes to a package of instant coconut pudding mix and stick it in the fridge. When I’m ready to serve, I top each piece with whipped cream add a little toasted coconut for garnish. Yum!
Note to Self: Do NOT eat this entire pie yourself

Lost Sock Day
Where do lost socks escape to anyway? It’s one of life’s mysteries. How to celebrate? It’s time to go through your sock drawer and get rid of all those unmatched singletons and send them to sock heaven to reunite with their mates or, if you’re thrifty or nerdy, you can always wear mismatched pairs.
May 10th
Mother’s Day
To all the Moms out there and the grandmas, nanas, yayas, mamas and mémères. To all the aunts and sisters, good friends and supportive, caring women who have helped and continue to help to mold us into what we are. We salute you!
May 11th
National Twilight Zone Day
National Twilight Zone Day commemorates that awesome TV show, The Twilight Zone, which aired from 1959-1964. Can you hear that theme song in your head? Multi-talented Rod Serling was the creator, writer and narrator of this ‘strange mix of horror, science-fiction, drama, comedy and superstition.’ You can watch episodes on AmazonPrime and YouTube for a fee and Netflix offers four seasons included in your subscription. Do you remember your favorite episode? ‘To Serve Man’ was my fave. Always loved the surprise endings!
May 12th
International Nurses Day
This is the finale of National Nurses Week celebrated on the birthday of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) considered the pioneer of modern nursing. Especially in this time of pandemic, take the time to thank a nurse for his/her commitment, compassion and contribution to society.
It’s also National Limerick Day and with that in mind, a shout out to our nephew, Eric, a registered nurse in Albuquerque, NM.
There once was a nurse name of Eric
Who started out first as a cleric
He soon changed to nursing
And without much reversing
He’s now nothing short of Homeric
May 13th
National Frog Jumping Day
Mark Twain’s 1865 short story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County is observed annually at the Jumping Frog Jubilee in Angel Camp, CA, but of course, not this year. This old mining town is quite a fun place to visit with bronze plaques engraved with frog jumping champion’s records on the main street sidewalks, giant frog statues and Mark Twain memorabilia everywhere. The current frog jumping record, by the way, was set in 1986 by Rosie the Ribeter, who jumped 21 feet, 5-3/4 inches.
To celebrate, download a free copy of Twain’s short story and read it to your pet frog.
Well, there you have it another week of celebrations bites the dust and there’s yet another week on the horizon. Stay tuned.
