When we ventured outside Blanche the next morning, the campsite was abloom in wildflowers. Texas bluebonnets, bright purple spiderwort, dainty Texas baby-blue-eyes, Drummond’s onion and Mexican buckeye all strutted their stuff in a rainbow pageant. And, yes, I had to use my NWF Wildflowers of North America book to identify them all. It’s hard to realize that we’re only minutes from downtown Austin.

A few days delay and a minor bout with COVID and we’re finally on our way. It was a lazy exit from Las Vegas as we had no definite destination in mind. This is Blanche’s “shakedown cruise” and we were champing at the bit to be on the road. We’re nomads at heart. Gypsies, wanderers… addicted to travel… slow travel.

I’d read about a newly established national park area only about 20 miles north of Las Vegas. The Tule (too-lee) Springs Fossil Beds National Monument was created in 2014 to protect Ice Age paleontological discoveries. We wanted to check it out.
