Take a Hike! The Historic Railroad Tunnels at Lake Mead

During the building of the Hoover Dam, originally known as the Boulder Dam (1931-1935), a 30-mile railroad line was laid between Boulder City and the new dam site in order to provide materials and supplies like cement mixing plants, quarry pits, a gravel sorting plant, and other resources in Las Vegas needed to build the dam.

According to the NPS site, “The tracks were dismantled in 1962. This trail was established in 1992, and connection to the Hoover Dam became open to the public in 2007.”

We’ve walked this 3.7-mile mostly level, gravel trail many, many times. It offers great views of Lake Mead and walking through its five tunnels is always a thrill… especially when the bats are in residence.

So, kick off your shoes, take a load off and we’ll do the walking.
