 Celebrating Juneteenth

Juneteenth, short for June Nineteenth, commemorates June 19, 1865, the day federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing enslaved African Americans from bondage. Many African Americans were unaware that they had been freed. It took two years for them to get the news. In 2021, Juneteenth became America’s newest federal holiday.

We ventured into Fredericton, New Brunswick’s capital city, the next morning. Stopping at the Visitor Center, we were issued a free visitor’s parking pass and provided with maps and suggestions for exploring the city. We began our walking tour at The Garrison, “an 18th-century British army base now a National Historic District home to artists’ studios and an outdoor theatre”.

St. John’s, Newfoundland’s Big Smoke

As we headed downtown, we were in search of St. John’s Jellybean Row. We drove down the city’s oldest street, Water Street, along the harbor. After some reading, I had learned that Jellybean Row or the Jellybean. Houses were not a specific street, but rather were many of the houses on the downtown hillside. Duckworth Street was a good place to begin. The brightly candy-colored row houses weren’t hard to find. They were everywhere!
