“The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agley...” Everyone's familiar with this line from Robert Burns' poem “To a Mouse, on Turning Her Up in Her Nest with the Plough”. Sometimes things just don't work out the way you plan them. You get turned up by the plough, as it were. Aboard Nine of Cups, this plays true more often than we'd like sometimes, but it's how it is.
Yes, we were all provisioned and all checked out and ready to go. The weather window was iffy, but possible. Then a pressing matter occurred at home and whoosh … fast as you can say “Book us a flight”, things changed. We canceled our float plan and made a flight plan. We gave away all the freshies we'd just bought, arranged to have someone watch over Cups and headed to King Shaka International Airport.
Nine of Cups will wait patiently in Durban as we head back home for a couple of weeks. Come on, don't feel badly. Pack your bags and come along. It's all part of the life we live.
