Another day we rode our bikes 16 miles RT on the Park Road, enjoying the scenery and quiet… the only sounds were the crunch of the tires on the gravel and an infrequent park bus. Ground squirrels and rabbits skittered across our path and startled ptarmigan fluttered up when we approached.

Heading Back North on the Kenai

We were in no hurry, the forecast showed gray skies and rain most everywhere. We headed back to the Skilak Wildlife Recreation Area along the Sterling Highway and found a free campground at Petersen Lake. I found this campground to be one of the most lovely we’ve stayed at. There are only four campsites, one of which was occupied. We snugged up parallel to the beautiful, tranquil lake. This was an area conducive to meditation, quiet pondering and introspection.

Welcome to the Spit

We’ve driven this road twice before and on a gorgeous day like today, we still consider it one of the most beautiful sights in the world. The extremely thin slip of land that juts out into Kachemak Bay is known as ‘The Spit’, the abrupt terminus of the Sterling Highway. According to several sources, “the Spit features the longest road (4.5 miles) into ocean waters in the entire world”.
