Leaving the dock in Kemah, Texas is probably one of the hardest things we’ve ever done. It’s appropriate that we should discuss this in today’s blog because it was 17 years ago yesterday on May 21, 2000 that we threw off the docklines and headed across the Gulf of Mexico for St. Petersburg, Florida. A 652 nm passage that was just the beginning of our life aboard. A passage that would take us far beyond the Gulf of Mexico and Florida both in distance and in confidence.

Despite a rainy start, what a glorious three days we had in Richmond last weekend. David offered me a getaway Mother’s Day weekend in the area of my choice … Paris and Prague were out of the question, however. We’d only ever visited Richmond in the past for business … airport, hotel, customer meeting, hotel, airport … not much in the way of touring involved. So Richmond was my choice … just over 100 miles northwest of Chesapeake … and a great choice it was. There’s a reason that Richmond was #3 in Travel + Leisure’s 2016 best places to travel.

There to Here … What is freedom?

This seems like a good time to introduce the reason that people feel compelled to “sail off into the sunset”. When people are asked why they want to travel the world, leave the land life and escape to the sea, one of the most common answers we hear is “the freedom”. This leads me to ask the question … what exactly is freedom? I’m not sure we ever really thought about it or at what cost it would come? When you choose the wandering, liveaboard life, what are you gaining and what are you giving up?
