Upfitting Blue - Project 2: Mounting Solar Panels

The second project of our van conversion on Blue, our Ford Transit 250, is now complete. He now has two 180 watt solar panels mounted on his roof.

 

Unlike the first project, installing the roof fan and ventilator, this installation didn't involve cutting a huge hole in the roof - just a few small ones. The hardest part was getting the panels up on the roof without damaging them or the van – or falling off the makeshift scaffolding in the process.

Upfitting Blue - Project 1: Installing a Roof Fan

We have officially started our van conversion on Blue, our long wheelbase, medium roof Ford Transit 250. The first project was to install a roof fan and ventilator to cool down the interior when it's hot outside. This required cutting a 14" x 14" hole in the roof of our beautiful van. Well, the cut is made, and I'd say Blue has officially lost his virginity.

Blue View – The First Cut is the Hardest

This week, the work on Blue began in earnest. Tuesday was sunny and clear, the perfect day for Mini-Project Number One – installing the roof fan. This required cutting a large, 14” x 14”, hole in the roof of our beautiful van. I thought that if I screwed it up, I could make the hole into a skylight; or if I screwed it up really badly, I could always make Blue into a convertible. It's good to have contingency plans.
