Old Town Scottsdale & Public Art
/We’d heard of, but never really explored Old Town Scottsdale, a Phoenix suburb, and decided it was time to check it out. Old Town is where settlement and development of Scottsdale first began. In 1888, Winfield Scott purchased 640 acres where Old Town Scottsdale is located today. This classy, albeit sometimes kitschy part of town with its ‘Old West’ theme, offers boutique shopping, souvenirs, jewelry, art galleries and lots of restaurants and bars. I found a self-guided walking tour map to download and we were on our way right from our hotel door.
The streets of Old Town Scottsdale are definitely ‘Old West’ and all decked out for the holidays.
Though the walking tour only highlighted 10 pieces of artwork, strategically located kiosks described several other pieces we encountered along our path. Take a look at some of our favorites.
Ain’t love grand? LOVE by Robert Indiana
The Yearlings - George-Anne Togoni
One-Eyed Jack - John Randalll Nelson
Winfred Scott Memorial by George-Anne Togoni immortalizes Scottsdale founder, Civil War veteran and minister,,Winfred Scott,, with his wife, Hele,n and mule, Old Maud.
Mayor Herb Drinkwater and his dog, Sadie… and close friend, Marcie (Artist: Clyde' ‘Ross’ Morgan)
We especially liked this one… ‘Information Flow’ by Justin Winters & Walter Productions
Bronze Horse Fountain - Bob Parks
‘Freedom’ sculpted from Alabama limestone by Robert Winsdlow. Sometimes we appreciate the labor, but just don’t get the theme.
‘Jack Knife’ - Ed Mell.
There were many more and our wanderings took up the better part of a lovely day.
And… in case, you’re wondering… Lots of calls to the Ford Dealer, but 5-1/2 weeks after we broke down in Sedona, still NO Blue! We’re told we can expect a diagnosis soon.
And FYI, we returned to Las Vegas for the Thanksgiving holiday but still have several tales of our Arizona trip which we’ll still share with you in the upcoming days. And, of course, we’ll return to Arizona to reclaim Blue…hopefully before the New Year!
