There was a violent thunder and lightning storm during the night with heavy rain and hail and extremely high winds. The morning, however, dawned sunny. We feared huge puddles and mud on the trail and were surprised that the trail was mostly dry. The storm, however, had downed trees and huge limbs and branches littered the path. We left from Hancock and spent more time dismounted clearing the path of debris so we could get through than we did riding.

As we continued along the Great Allegheny Passage we enjoyed it more and more. There was something new to see and observe and learn everyday. The only problem with bike riding is that you tend to miss things along the way. If you’ve got your speed up and you’re tooling right along, it’s hard to stop and read every info sign displayed along the route. Though we whizzed by some things, we managed to take in many others.

The Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) is a multi-use, recreational, repurposed railroad line (rail-trail) that stretches ~150 miles from Cumberland, Maryland to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We decided to start at the Pittsburgh end and work our way east to Cumberland with the thought that we’d continue onto the C&O Towpath from Cumberland to Washington DC if we were enjoying ourselves.
