It was hot and dry with a scorching southerly wind whipping up dust and pollen. We wanted an easy first day and settled on our favorite state park, Valley of Fire, ~60 miles northeast of Las Vegas. We avoided the interstate and took the scenic route through Lake Las Vegas and along Northshore Road.
Read MoreThis part of the trail was superb. Instead of crossing busy streets, we went over and under them. The paved trail was smooth and level and passed over beautiful wooden arched bridges. Under a forested canopy, we criss-crossed over the Alum Creek as it wended its way along, sometimes riding over long, planked boardwalks.
Read MoreFrom our reading, we anticipated coming across the Bridge of Dreams, a 370-foot long bridge spanning the Mohican River. This railroad bridge was originally built in the 1920s and, through a local effort, was covered in 1998. According to Wiki, “It is the second longest covered bridge in Ohio and the third longest covered bridge in the United States.”
