We finally made our way into the Shipwreck Museum. The story of the Edmund Fitzgerald was front and center as we entered the museum. The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was an American Great Lakes freighter that sank in Lake Superior during a storm on November 10, 1975. The entire crew of 29 men were lost.

The original bell is now displayed at the entrance of the museum. Gordon Lightfoot’s The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was playing in the background and the song haunted us for the rest of the day.

We have lots of unfinished business to handle on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (UP). We haven’t finished the south shore of the Lake Superior Circle Tour and we skipped the section of US-2 along Lake Michigan’s north shore between Duluth and St. Ignace. We definitely had some catching up to do before we could continue on our Great Northern journey.

I remembered watching ‘Somewhere in Time’ about a hundred years ago, and yearning to visit the island. Islands have a special allure and charm to them and Mackinac is no exception.
