When we were considering options for a rest day, we initially didn’t know where we wanted to go. We saw a sign for Kokomo, I did a little research, and the decision was made. “Kokomo… that’s where we want to go… we’ll get there fast and then we’ll take it slow.” We’d never been to Kokomo, Indiana before, but once we started singing the Beach Boys’ song, there was no turning back.

Dayton Aviation Heritage & Goodbye, Ohio

Since it was a short riding day, an afternoon diversion was in order. Dayton Aviation Heritage NHP, operated by the National Park Service, seemed a perfect place to spend a few hours. The Wright Brothers operated a bicycle shop and a print shop at the park’s location and it was here in Dayton that most of the development of their first airplane was conceived and conducted.

Do you remember where you were when you heard the news of 9/11? It was our first year aboard Nine of Cups and we were anchored in the harbor at Newport, Rhode Island. My sister, Lin, called just before 9AM to tell me a plane had accidentally crashed into the World Trade Center North Tower. While we were talking, the news broke that a second plane had crashed into the South Tower. It was no longer accidental, it was intentional. We dinghied into shore and found a bar that had a TV tuned to the news. We sat there for hours and listened in horror as we learned of the four hijacked planes. It’s not something that’s easily forgotten.
