From El Paso until we crossed into Arizona as we cruised along I-10, we saw billboards for ‘The Thing’. The first couple of signs were pretty much ignored, but as they continued for miles and miles, we started to wonder exactly what ‘The Thing’ was. Seems like we ought to check it out, don’t you think?

We’d never visited before and here was our chance. After about 10 miles or so the paved road turned to packed gravel and ended abruptly in a parking lot at which no fort was visible.
