David provided a map of our 15,343-mile road trip this past summer, but I prefer to think of the trip in terms of experiences and images. He’s the analytical engineer; I’m the non-statistical romantic, looking for beauty, uniqueness, or sometimes absurdity wherever we travel. As always, we were amazed and sometimes overwhelmed by the beauty, majesty, vastness, and diversity of the USA.

The Wright Brothers operated a bicycle shop and a print shop at the park’s location and it was here in Dayton that most of the development of their first airplane was conceived and conducted.

My sister, Lin, called just before 9AM to tell me a plane had accidentally crashed into the World Trade Center North Tower. While we were talking, the news broke that a second plane had crashed into the South Tower. It was no longer accidental, it was intentional. We dinghied into shore and found a bar that had a TV tuned to the news. We sat there for hours and listened in horror as we learned of the four hijacked planes. It’s not something that’s easily forgotten.
