Cannon Beach got its name from a cannon found after it had washed overboard, but its claim to fame is Haystack Rock, a 235’ sea stack that pokes up out of the water just off the beach. In fact, at low tide you can walk to it. Itis the “3rd largest intertidal monolith in the world.”

A walk among these ancient trees is mind-boggling. Long before Europeans ever stepped foot on this continent, these trees were growing and thriving here. We could see, smell, and touch these millennia-old living things. How humbling.

It was unseasonably cool as we headed north to Valley of Fire State Park, one of our favorite Nevada state parks, and found the signed entrance to the trail.
