Happy Kidney Day!
/World Kidney Month is celebrated in March, but we celebrate ‘Kidney Day’ on October 15th, the anniversary of our cruising friend Burger’s kidney transplant. It’s been a whole year since I kissed David goodbye and watched him disappear behind the OR doors at Wake Forest Hospital. David’s living donor kidney donation to Burger seems like a century ago. It’s been a busy, hectic year for all of us, but a productive one. Both men recovered quickly following surgery and have resumed their normal lives.

David has had no regrets, and neither has Burger, who has relished his new lease on life and made the most of it. From barely being able to walk across a parking lot, Burger has renewed his passion for pickleball, lost weight, and he and Nancy are ‘on the road’ once again, traveling in their new RV. David is back to his old self… active, hiking, and doing projects. We didn’t have a chance to get caught up with them this year, but hopefully we’ll get together in 2026.
Here’s a three-part series from last year that outlines David’s journey from qualifying as a donor to surgery and recovery. A reminder of just how fragile life is and how important it is to relish every moment.
Life is so very good!
